Engtech: Movies For Geeks
Here’s a great list of 81 movies for geeks over at //engtech. It’s no surprise that I’ve seen many of the films listed there, and enjoyed them, so somebody has gotten one segment of my taste dialed. Out of this list, my personal favorites are:
I used to work in Redwood Shores which with its proximity to Houlihan’s (a mediocre chain TGIF style joint) bears a definite resemblance to the hapless office in this film. There’s one brief scene where the workers go off to lunch and have to dip down into a grassy gully between parking lots. This always had me chuckling, because office parks are definitely not designed for pedestrians. Everything else about the film is pitch-perfect to your average cubicle denizen – or anybody whose boss has asked them to put in extra hours.
Being John Malkovich
Probably my favorite film since I moved to the Bay Area in 1999. I think it’s the combination of a confusing plot plus the subject matter is decidedly strange – puppetry, hot lesbian witches, and the odd fame of John Malkovich of all things. Also, both John Cusak and Cameron Diaz look like they’ve been run over by a bus and slept in a car-full of monkeys for a few days.
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
I’m a big Python fan, but this is an extra favorite since when a friend first saw it, he was so angered by the lack of a suitable ending that he fast-forwarded through the credits to see if there was anything afterwards.
Other films on the list are the obligatory Star Wars, Star Trek, and anime entries like Ghost in the Shell and Akira. Oh, and of course, the cat pictures are an added bonus.
