Music Notes: Sid and Susie
Since I’ve been living in under a relative musical rock for the past few years, here’s a guilty pleasure as far as I’m concerned, that I had no idea existed: An album by Sid and Susie - better known as Matthew Sweet and Susanna Hoffs, doing covers of sixties and early seventies songs.
Susanna Hoffs caught my attention as part of the Bangles, and Matthew Sweet broke big a bit later with the outstanding Girlfriend. One song in particular, I’ve Been Waiting is perfection as far as I’m concerned.
I think the pair had some collaboration in regards to the Austin Powers movies, but this Sid and Susie project is just covers, straight up; no jokes involving spies with bad teeth. Based on the sound samples, in some instances it’s pretty groovy stuff - right up my alley - especially if you get off hearing the voice behind Manic Monday take a stab at The Beatles’ And Your Bird Can Sing. It also sounds like they do pretty shimmery versions of The Kids Are Alright and Monday, Monday.
Handy thing that I just received an Amazon gift certificate, so this is one CD I’ll be buying. I’ll post a more proper album review at that point.
Here’s a video of Sid and Susie performing the Beatles’ Rain - voices as clear as ever. Be forewarned that Matthew Sweet’s looking kind of Lee Adama-ish. To quote my friend Dave from several years ago, looks like he might need to lay off the sweets.
