Blogspace Meme: Five Things

December 28th, 2006

I was a bit at a loss for something to write about today, so it was good timing to be handed the “Five Things” blog subject by the multi-talented J. Leroy. This is my first time at something like this – but basically some bloggers send around ideas for posts and once they’ve done their duty, tap others to join in and link… sort of like a chain letter.

Luckily the subject of this particular chain-blogging-meme is “Five Things You May Not Have Known About Me” which will be easy in my case, as I only started this blog recently – therefore there’s probably quite a bit “you” don’t know about “me.”

I’m also assuming this means five more unusual and slightly embarrassing items. So here goes:

1. In college, I played bass in a Grateful Dead cover band. It was loads of fun, if only to learn songs like Scarlet Begonias or Fire On The Mountain – while on stage. The two guitarists used to come up with transitions into songs I never heard of, and start yelling out chords at me, while we were playing them. Being on bass, it hardly mattered. I suppose the punchline of this story is that I don’t own a single Grateful Dead album nor do I particularly like their music. But such is the plight of a bass player in demand.

2. I used to love chorizo – until I found out what one common ingredient is. While in graduate school on a tight budget, I enjoyed eating these enormous breakfast burritos that could cover two meals. I was a big fan of the spicy chorizo sausage until I read the book Big Secrets which reveals a sometime ingredient in this Mexican delicacy… well, I’ll just offer up this link and you can find out for yourself.

3. Various celebrities I’ve been fascinated with over my life: The Beatles, Elvis Costello, James Dean, Shalom Harlow, Isabelle Adjani, Alfred Hitchcock.

4. The computers I’ve used in order: Apple IIe (my parents), Macintosh SE 30, Power Macintosh 7100, a purple iMac, a graphite iBook, a G4 iMac (one of the “lampshade” shaped ones), and a MacBook. I flirted with the PC side around the time I bought the 7100 but didn’t.

5. I was once a member of the official Bangles fan club. Yeah, I think most teenagers signed up for some fan club of some sort that in retrospect seems a bit odd. It was called “Bangles and Mash” and had a newsletter and discounts on band-related stuff – I think there’s a small stash of memorabilia hidden in a closet back at my parent’s house. If you ever want to know what famous celebrity appeared in the video for Going Down To Liverpool you know who to ask.

And here are five six other people who I’ll invite to play along with this game:

Kaulapi: My brother Dan, who’s in Law School and works for the GAO, has a blog which although he’s really busy, could use some prodding for a blog update.

Tunequest.org: Tunequest gives us unusual music and freebies in his feed, so I’d love to find out more about the eclectic music collector.

FChouse: Friendly Italian programmer living in England.

Techipedia: Recently posted a great list of SEO information, and used to play Apple IIe games. Sounds like a good subject for this meme (was already tapped, so I’ll adjust this list).

Robert Rouse: Any Beatles blogger with a left of center viewpoint is worth inclusion.

Woody Miller: Talented artist with a blog. Check out his work at: woodymillerart.com.

  • Ahhhhh, I'm not sure I can think of 5 new things: I kind of already posted one here. Should I try at it again? ;)

Tonight, I'm en-route to London, so I might have time to think of more if you insist! :D
  • Oh rats... I looked at the Techipedia blog and didn't see it so I thought you hadn't been tapped. It's up to you... I can bug someone else!
  • I'll try to think of 5 new things at 37,000 feet... but yeah, you might want to bug someone else. I know how hard it was to think of those first 5! :)
  • I feel guilty...
I named you well after you named me... :(
  • Hey no worries you were on holiday! That is a good excuse. And I will of course follow one of the items on your list which is "forgive"...!
