Some Nerdy Holiday Gift Ideas
Time for that inevitable question: “What do you want for Christmas?” and although I like a surprise and am pretty a-materialistic, I do have a short list of stuff I’ve had my eyes on. I post this only to give you some ideas for your own shopping: I’m not hitting you up for gifts.
1. Monty Python 16-Ton Megaset.
As of this posting, this is a DVD set containing all the episodes plus extras, for a sale price. It’s usually $100, but right now it’s 30% off.
I think many other TV series on DVD are on sale right now, so it might be worth checking out if you know someone who’s really into a particular show.
2. Tunewear Tetran.
Anybody with an iPod that uses the ear buds knows about the dreaded “earbud tangle”. The other day I had two sets of earphones tangled into a Gordian knot of tune-stopping pain. Anyhow, this little guy looks to alleviate that problem, plus he comes in colors and is cute, for only $12.95.
3. Beverages and More (BevMo) Gift Card.
I’m totally fine with the gift card thing, so long as it’s to a store I’d like to shop at (a KMart gift card might not be the best). Because of my bottle cap collection, I’m a regular patron of Beverages and More. They have a huge selection of beer, wine, and other social lubricants.
4. We Love Katamari.
I’m still stuck on the PlayStation 2 but here’s a cool game I’ve been wanting ever since I played Katamari Damacy. This sequel is also highly rated. The game is basically about rolling an ever-growing ball of stuff around and getting things to stick to it.
5. WaterField Designs (shameless plug)
My wife works for Waterfield Designs. They sell cases for laptops, iPods, digital cameras… technology stuff - as well as messenger bags. I’ve been using their MacBook sleeve case for several months and it’s awesome.
6. Beatles Love CD
If you know someone who’s a Beatles fan (pretty much anybody over 45 these days) this might be a good pick. It’s the soundtrack to a Cirque de Soleil show. I like it.
7. iTrip (or something similar)
When driving, I need something to stream music from an iPod to the car radio.
8. A Wii
A few weeks ago my wife and I checked out a friend’s Wii and it was awesome. Simple, fun entertainment that anybody can enjoy. The only downside is that it’s selling out as soon as stores get them, so I don’t think our odds are good for getting one before Christmas.
9. Subscription to ReadyMade magazine
This is a pretty neat periodical, published in the Bay Area that’s all about making cool stuff out of things not intended for that purpose. They’ve broadened a bit into interior decorating but the core theme - of making do with what you have or can find for cheap - is still there. I can’t say I’ve actually made much of what’s in here, but it’s neat to get the brain working on alternative ways of viewing what we’re handed in this mass-produced society. A similar option would be Make magazine.
10. iTunes Gift Card.
When in doubt, give the gift of choice. There are always more tunes to be had, especially now that I’m trying to make some of my own.
