Digg Redesign

DiggDigg just released a site redesign, featuring some user interface enhancements and new tools. Since I still use the site fairly often, here are some initial impressions.

The most obvious change is that the main section navigation has been moved to the top of the screen. Although I like this placement, one thing that’s a bit annoying is the small text, and therefore I find the sections harder to find, read, and click on. Second, the top navigation is really close to their top banner advertising, which I can’t help but think is a cynical strategy to get more people to click on their ads. The sad thing is this will definitely work, if only because people will click them by mistake.

I do like the top 10 listing with smaller icons in the lower right, and the submit a new story in the upper left. The green colors beneath the blue are growing on me.

The video section is pretty cool. I really like the sweet way the videos pop up over the screen and the screen darkens. Naturally, it reminds me of the Lightbox plug in (which I use on this blog), so I’m a bit biased. The mini superimposed player also has a digg button right on it, making user participation easier, and also the effect is that people don’t leave the page to watch the video.

So all in all, I’m impressed with these improvements. However, I really wish digg would fix the way comments work. Because they have so many users, they don’t thread very well and you can only reply to the top level. It would be nicer if they could nest ad infinitum.

Basically, I’m a fan of the way comments work on Craigslist. Only the headline shows, and even if a comment is rated down to heck, it’s still there. But a single Craigslist page can hold many more comments than the way they’re handled on digg. Having a better commenting set-up would hopefully encourage more comments and therefore more community.

Anyhow, pretty decent update in my humble opinion.
