Yahoo! Music: Moderate Thumbs Up
December 16th, 2006
I have to give credit where credit is due, and after some pretty annoying Yahoo! experiences in the past few months (Yahoo! TV and The 9), I checked out Yahoo! Music, and was largely pleased, and in some instances impressed.
The biggest improvement for me is that the site now (more or less) works on the Mac. I used to get annoyed at Yahoo! Music because none of the videos would play for me, probably because they were all in Windows Media or some other anti-Apple format. But now (maybe because I downloaded that FlipForMac thing), I can finally watch Yahoo! Music videos.
Overall there’s a (dare I say it) Mac-like polish to the user interface design. I had no problem navigating through some areas and finding some music and videos I wanted to check out.
Radio stations were a different story – they didn’t work for me in Safari or Firefox. But I have no interest in that service or Yahoo! Music Unlimited, as I have iTunes.
The biggest negative is that they have pre-roll commercials in front of the music videos. They don’t show up all the time, but it’s fairly annoying. At the very least, they should show different commercials each time.
