Music Notes: Bands I Wish Would Get Back Together
This is a personal list, and you probably have other groups you’re missing, but here are some bands I wish never broke up, or broke up too early to really get interesting.
1. The Grays
This was a super group of a Jellyfish guy (Jason Falkner), Jon Brion (who went on to produce Aimee Mann and Fiona Apple), Buddy Judge, and Dan McCarroll. They put out one album, Ro Sham Bo — and that’s it.
2. The Juliana Hatfield Three
Become What You Are is in my opinion Juliana’s best solo album, featuring tunes like My Sister, Supermodel, and Spin The Bottle. I don’t think her later stuff is anywhere near as clear and direct as these indie-pop-rock gems.
3. The Sugarcubes
Bjork… that gooney trumpet… split my music mind wide open.
4. Squeeze
I’m talking about a mix of Paul Carrack, Jools Holland with Difford and Tilbrook, and how about Pete Thomas on drums?
5. XTC
It would be amusing to have the trio of Andy Partridge, Colin Moulding, and Dave Gregory reunite with some of the original members (Barry Andrews and Terry Chambers), if not to tour then at least record an album in someone’s woodshed.
Note: Oh, and of course, since I’m kind of out of the loop musically, if any of these bands have in fact gotten back together please let me know.
