Iconistan: Social News Real Estate

December 14th, 2006

TechnologyAccording to Wired, there’s a new real estate battle brewing for the “social bookmarking bar” area at the bottom of blog posts. Real estate? Can we get Casey Serin involved, somehow?

I recently added a strip of this sort. It only appears in the post page itself, and lists links to StumbleUpon, Digg, Del.icio.us, Newsvine, Spurl, Simpy, Furl, Reddit, and Yahoo!. I don’t even use the majority of those sites.

Anyhow, I settled on doing a text only bar instead of a row of icons since a slew of icons was just too visually disturbing.

As for “iconistan” itself, my thinking is, I’m getting too lazy to submit my own blog posts to these social news sites - someone else should probably decide if something I’ve written is worth submitting. But there’s a fine line between making things easier for your readers versus looking like a popularity whore, and I’m trying to keep on the generally honest side of things - so I opted for a bar that’s pretty inocuous and would only be recognizeable to someone who knew what those sites do in the first place.

So to sum up, I think this “battle” over this real estate is non-existent. If people really feel the urge to submit something to a social news website, they’ll do it, with or without the presence of “iconistan”.
