Some Interesting Music Videos

December 8th, 2006

MusicMr. Sang got me thinking about some favorite music videos. I pretty much stopped watching MTV sometime in the mid nineties, so all of these “interesting” videos are old… really old… now that I think about it. I’m sure there are some better ones that came along since these, and if so, feel free to suggest some of your own favorites.

A-Ha: Take On Me

Good job to these dudes to making synthesizers and comic books seem cool. I always had the hots for the girl in this video, too. A good sense of drama builds when it looks like she’s going to get stuck in the cartoon world. Kind of like a pencil and paper Tron in three minutes.

The Beatles: Strawberry Fields Forever

I’m pretty sure when this one came out people thought “these guys are stoned out of their minds,” which was probably accurate. They all look hashed-out and mopey, like someone dumped a bucket of water on them. But it’s appropriate, as the song is the same way, and how else can you explain tying a piano to a tree, that no-one else is in.

Elvis Costello: Accidents Will Happen

Most of Elvis Costello’s videos are really bad, mostly because he looks like Buddy Holly smashed with Sid Vicious or Danny DeVito. Anyhow, I like this one because it’s got that pop-art Lichtenstein cartoony look but all hand-drawn, and Costello doesn’t really appear in it.

Lastly here’s Sang’s video that got me thinking about this subject:

Fiona Apple: All Across the Universe

Check out all the chaos going on around Fiona Apple, the singer. Hard to film this stuff.

The director is Paul Thomas Anderson, who also directed this one for the song Try by Michael Penn.

Michael Penn: Try

Disclosure: I own a tiny amount of Apple stock.

some interesting choices Jason. That Elvis Costello video is nice. You know, I saw him in concert last year, in Hawaii (it was with the Honolulu pops orchestra at the concert hall).

some of my favorite 80s videos:

    The Cure “Boys Don’t Cry”

    Blondie “Rapture”
I wish NY was still like this….

The Smiths “How Soon Is Now?”
directed by experimental filmmaker Derek Jarman

The Sundays “Here’s Where the Story Ends”
    Remember this one?

    David Bowie “Lets Dance”
    Hilarious….

    Klaus Nomi “Simple Man”
Truely bizarre, truely 80s. There’s a really great documentary made about him called “Nomi Song”.

    i love youtube

“Lets Dance” yup that’s the one, with these Mexican dudes giving the big shaft to The Man, in a time of nuclear escalation.

    It’s 28 degrees outside… freezing here.
