Second Life: Wasteful?

December 5th, 2006

Second LifeInteresting exercise on how much power Second Life consumes. The end result is that a Second Life avatar is consuming the same amount of power as a Brazillian.

I don’t know; I think the whole idea of Second Life is inherently wasteful, if not the power then the whole concept. And considering how the average American consumes multiple times more than citizens of other nations, I don’t feel too bad about Second Life.

It’s supposed to be entertainment, not an economy with purpose. Although, one thing that would make me feel better is if anything useful or productive comes out of it in the end. Maybe some enterprising business could use the denizens of Second Life as some huge hive-mind to solve problems or create art… or something.

In other news, I found out the Second Life exchange rate is about 250 Linden dollars to one American dollar. So I’m still a loser, but with a some spare change floating in my pocket. I still haven’t found out what I can buy with my $217 Linden dollars in Second Life.
