Apple and Gaming

December 5th, 2006

Amusing AppleInsider article here about an analyst suggesting Apple might want to get into gaming, either through more games on the iPod Video or possibly through its upcoming iTV.

I don’t think Apple has any prayer of competing with the top consoles (XBOX, PlayStation 3, Wii) but there might a great angle for creating low-profile, easy games designed for just a few minutes of entertainment, and targeted at the casual gamer. I’ve already enjoyed Tetris on my iPod while waiting for the bus, for example.

There are also all kinds of Flash games making the rounds on the internet that would be loads of fun to enjoy on an iPod.

Another thought is Apple could leverage all the iLife applications. There’s already a “name that tune” style game using all the MP3s. How about a memory game with digital photos, for example?

Lastly, a killer app for iPod or better yet, iTV would be to get MAME running on it. Of course, Apple would have to license all the ROMs, but that shouldn’t be too hard for the older games that nobody is playing (legally, anyway).

So there are several ways I could see Apple making a side-business out of video games for iPod or iTV – that wouldn’t necessitate competing with the big three. I think Apple ought to test the waters with games for casual gamers, and if in a few years that market is established, then maybe get more serious.

Meanwhile, it will be one more reason to buy an iPod.

  • Wow... Pippin... never got to try that out. I think I vaguely remember seeing it in some Good Guys type store and thinking that was a strange idea.

We've come a long way since Apple was confused and nearly toast... that Apple coming up with a gaming console isn't totally laughed at...
  • Man that would be amazing. With apple's class and charm and innovation it can add so much more to the gaming world and more that that it will push other people to do better and this can result in better products.
