AOL Strangeness: Buy Out?

November 16th, 2006

TechnologyThis is a rare post for me, total blogosphere speculation, but I can’t resist. Jason Calacanis of AOL has presumeably resigned, due to the departure of John Miller, his mentor.

AOL is in a strange place right now, as it doesn’t seem to know what to do with Netscape and has even embarked on a Web 1.0-esque “free” strategy through nuking its membership fee. Although I like “free” just as much as anyone, I still wouldn’t use AOL even if they paid me. Actually, isn’t paying people to submit links what Calacanis was doing at Netscape… never mind.

Anyhow, here’s a link to a recent John Miller interview, feeling that AOL would be bought as soon as Time-Warner cut them loose, saying “I don’t believe there is a scenario whereby we could have an independent AOL. I think we would be bought as fast as we could draw up the papers.”

So perhaps an acquisition is imminent, and Miller and Calacanis wanted no part of it. Speculate amongst yourselves.

Note: It’s been confirmed: Calacanis has left AOL. We’ll surely learn more about why in the days to come.
