Why I Might Buy An iPhone

November 15th, 2006

Here’s a report from Forbes that Apple has placed an order for 12 million iPhones for 2007. I’ve actually been holding out on buying a cell phone until I see what Apple has up its sleeve. Here are my reasons:

1. It will sync with my Mac. I have a desktop iMac with an address book, iTunes, and photos in iPhoto, all ready to be synced up with a cell phone. It will be a given that an iPhone will work seamlessly with any Mac.

2. The user interface will be simplified. One thing that bugs me about most cell phones is I can’t make heads or tails of them, even when all I want to do is make a phone call. Apple will certainly apply a user-friendly design aesthetic to the iPhone. The less buttons, the better, as far as I’m concerned.

3. Hopefully they will make the cell phone plan simpler, too. I’d love it if Apple applied some of its few choices, flat pricing ideas to the tangled jungle that is the cell phone plan. Another thing they might do is not have it tied to a specific carrier.

4. It will look cool. I’m hoping for something that looks like the current iPod Nano (in different colors).

5. Apple already knows computers. I’ve noticed more and more cell phones have computer-like functionality, like email, web browsing, playing music, and showing movies. Apple already knows how to do all of this stuff simply, and more.

It sure would be amazing if Apple announces an iPhone at MacWorld, a few months from now. We’ll see.
