Compare These Popular Blog Posts
So here’s a cool post from Google Blogoscoped. It’s basically a survey from popular bloggers about the most popular posts on their blogs. It’s definitely interesting reading for any aspiring blogger.
These are the similarities I noticed right off the bat:
1. Headlines say it all. You know exactly what you’re going to get if you click on the link. Almost all are well written with subjects, verbs, and promised entertainment if you continue on to the article. They make you want to read further.
2. Timely news stories. It pays off to have a technology-related scoop or be the first to post an opinion about a timely, popular news story.
3. Opinion. I’m starting to think Do Macs Suck? is not as click-tempting as Why Macs Suck. Maybe when people visit a blog, they expect strong, declarative opinions. So even if an article is as close to objective as you can get, it probably won’t hurt to have a strongly-stated position in the headline just to get people’s attention.
4. Advice. Key words are “Tips,” “How to,” “Guide.” Not as many of these as I would have thought, but enough to warrant a mention.
Anyhow, these items are definitely something I’ll think about when crafting blog headlines or thinking about subjects for future posts.
