Zune: Gizmodo Review
So here’s a link to the first big Zune review at Gizmodo. I’ll have to check a Zune out in the flesh first chance I get, but here are some initial impressions on the first real iPod competitor.
I actually like the brown and green colors. It’s rather 70s retro and looks a bit like a mint chocolate bar.
Zune is upgradeable. Smart move, since the technical features are a bit wanting, especially the WiFi.
“Guesting” might allow people to share songs without the three play limitation.
There’s some user ranking action going on in the Music Marketplace, where people rank songs.
You can stream music to an Xbox 360.
All in all, it seems like a solid foundation to build upon. People may be underestimating the synergy of the Zune, Xbox 360, and Vista. It also looks like the UI has a polish that isn’t on the iPod (yet).
But unfortunately, the Zune isn’t Mac compatible right now, and I’m already so imbedded in the iTunes way of doing things, that Microsoft will have to come up with something that blows me away, before I trade in my iPod Video for a Zune.
