Crazy Business Idea 3: Parking Space Reservations

November 2nd, 2006

EconomyDuring times of caffeine-induced jitters, I sometimes come up with business ideas that seem great at the time, but probably aren’t. In the spirit of sharing, I thought I’d let some of these concepts loose on this blog for public scrutiny (or ridicule). Please let me know your thoughts, especially if you’d like to open up a franchise.

The Business: Parking Space Reservations.

Description: We all know how frustrating it can be to find parking in a city, shopping mall, or in front of a restaurant. Parking space reservations solves that problem.

The company has a fleet of easily-identifiable cars, maybe painted bright green. Customer calls parking service ahead of time, and one of the fleet cars goes out to the desired location and finds street parking and parks in it. When the customer arrives, the space is given up to the customer.

Fee is based on location and amount of time the fleet car spends waiting, probably no more than $1-5.

In order to recoup costs, cars can be covered with corporate advertising.

Target Market: Anyone in an urban area who is sick of paying high prices for a parking garage and prefers street parking. Anyone who can’t stand the frustrating experience of searching for a parking space.

Problems: Cost of maintaining a fleet of cars prohibitively high.
