iPod Video: Bezel Interface
This is a pretty sweet patent that was recently filed by Apple, according to Softpedia. It’s pretty much a given that an iPod with a screen covering the entire surface would be a cool idea, but the resulting problem would be what to do with the click-wheel interface. The easy solution is to simulate the click wheel through software on a touch-sensitive screen, but there will inevitably be problems with smudging and possibly scratching.
So the patent pictures suggest an interesting work-around: make the bezel surround the screen touch-sensitive. Kind of cool idea, although doing the scrolly-wheel thing around the entire perimeter of the iPod would not be fun. Maybe it’s just a swipe down the right side of the screen to scroll down, instead. Also a nice touch are small visual cues generated on the screen itself to indicate different functions.
If true, it will be a bit sad to see the click-wheel go, but this interface has more possibilties.
Disclosure: I own a tiny amount of Apple stock.
