1001 Books and AFI 100 Films Mashup

October 23rd, 2006

Blogger Erik Vossman got me thinking of one way to tackle the 1001 Books You Must Read Before You Die list… cheat a little and read the books based on movies, or maybe watch the movies first and then read the books. I’ve been intending to watch all the films on the AFI 100 American films for some time now, and have gotten through about 50.

So here’s a list of the book titles on the 1001 Books list shoved through the filter of the AFI 100. The result is just a handful of books to read that would make an easy start:

The Godfather (3 on AFI) (IMDB)

Gone With The Wind (4 on AFI) (IMDB)

The Graduate (7 on AFI) (IMDB) (Webomatica)

One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest (20 on AFI) (IMDB)

The Grapes Of Wrath (21 on AFI) (IMDB)

2001: A Space Odyssey (22 on AFI) (IMDB) (Webomatica)

The Maltese Falcon (23 on AFI) (IMDB)

To Kill A Mockingbird (34 on AFI) (IMDB)

Doctor Zhivago (39 on AFI) (IMDB)

A Clockwork Orange (46 on AFI) (IMDB) (Webomatica)

All Quiet On The Western Front (54 on AFI) (IMDB)

The Third Man (57 on AFI) (IMDB)

Ben-Hur (72 on AFI) (IMDB)

Wuthering Heights (73 on AFI) (IMDB)

Frankenstein (87 on AFI) (IMDB)

Anyhow, I think I’ll do another post that lists all the books on the 1001 books list that were turned into movies. Yet another way to tackle this insanely lengthy list.

  • Great comparison and thanks for digging through those lists. That book one is intense.

I've got a lot of the AFI but most I wouldn't mind seeing again. Maybe I'll have to join netflicks :)
  • Erik I like Netflix. If you watch a lot of movies it pays for itself pretty quickly. Also, my turn around time via the mail is only a few days. This may be different in other parts of the country however (I live in the Bay Area, and netflix is based in Los Gatos).
