Free WiFi in San Francisco Hitting a Bump
Kind of annoying post by Davis Freeberg about how the free WiFi for all San Francisco residents project is slowing down. Techdirt chalks it up to poor planning on the city’s part. Or the bureaucratic tendency that whenever something is moving forward, everyone and their special interest tries to tag along and get their cut.
I find this annoying, because this is supposed to be free WiFi for the population, what do these politicians want? Free plus a weekly paycheck? Free plus a burrito? How can it get much better than free?
I’ll just say that San Francisco and its proximity to Silicon Valley implies that it should have its act together, see the importance of this technology, and be able to negotiate this. Or if WiFi itself is the problem, be able to think ahead and leap forward to WiMax.
Meanwhile, CalTrain is moving ahead with internet access on its trains, and Google has wired up Mountain View.
