Earthquake in Hawaii
October 15th, 2006
There was 6.5 magnitude earthquake in Hawaii, where I grew up, on Sunday morning. I guess there weren’t any fatalities but there was a fair amount of building damage and some of the highways on various islands are blocked by landslides. The power is also out on several islands, including all of Oahu where my parents live. I can’t get a hold of anybody on the phone out there. I’m assuming this is because of the power outage.
Update: I finally got in touch with my folks. Their phone wasn’t picking up because the power’s been out all day. Other than that everything’s fine with them on Oahu.
The Honolulu Advertiser is the major newspaper there so I’ve been checking their website to figure out what’s going on. They have a web page set up for comments from people who experienced the earthquake.
Living in California, specifically the Bay Area, the whole earthquake thing is pretty scary. I’ve had good luck in that although I’ve been living here and Los Angeles for almost eight years now, I haven’t felt a really big earthquake. I was in Oregon during the Loma Prieta and Northridge quakes. One of these days however, I’m sure it will happen here.
