Season 3, Episode 3

Battlestar Galactica: Exodus

The third episode Exodus was somber with an almost religious, contemplative theme, reinforcing everything at stake before a huge rescue effort to come, and we’re given some hints as to the importance of Hera, the Cylon and human hybrid baby of Athena and Helo.

To start off, an expertly filmed skip back in time gets us out of the tight situation at the end of the previous episode Precipice. We find out Chief and a few troops were at the execution location. With a little bit of gun play, they save the prisoners, including Roslin, Tom Zarek, and Callie.

Meanwhile, Adama and Lee set the rescue operation in motion. The Pegasus and Galactica will separate. Adama will take the Galactica to New Caprica to save the human population imprisoned by the Cylons. There’s an emotional scene where Lee says goodbye to his father Adama. What is it about bagpipes and military ceremony that makes one sad?

Back at New Caprica, it’s realized that Tigh’s wife Ellen has been working for the Cylons. Athena splits off to get the keys for the spaceships still stored on New Caprica.

The plot thread of baby Hera is reintroduced. A priest gives Cylon Number 3 (Lucy Lawless) a prediction that she will find the baby and hold it in her arms. Special attention is being paid to get the baby and her surrogate mother off New Caprica and onto Galactica. I can’t help but think Hera is being set up as some sort of prophetic, “chosen one” type deal. Perhaps a hint of more religious references to come?

A confrontation between Tigh and his wife is very tense as he confronts the reality that his wife is in fact aiding the Cylons. I’m sure he’ll be duly pissed when he finds out she’s been boinking a skin-job.

Athena walks right into the Cylon compound where the keys to the ships still on New Caprica are stored. There she runs into Number 3, who tells Athena that Hera is still alive, and tries to use this as a wedge to test Athena’s loyalty to the humans. Athena is certain that Adama wouldn’t lie to her, and chooses to continue helping the humans. But a kernel of doubt has been planted.

Galactica receives word that Athena has the launch keys. Adama gives a dead serious, mission-critical speech to the crew in preparation for a seriously awesome battle in the next episode.

After three episodes of laying the foundation for the return of Adama to New Caprica, the next one should be incredible. I can hardly wait.
