YouTube and Google: Mark Cuban’s Thoughts

October 8th, 2006

GoogleMore on this Google + YouTube thing. Mark Cuban still thinks the Google buying YouTube deal is stupid. I’m not agreeing with Mark but he does talk a lot about the copyright issues which this potential deal doesn’t address.

Shoemoney has a good post about why the deal does make sense. One good point is that the biggest problem for YouTube’s profitability has been the bandwith costs to host all those videos. Bandwidth isn’t a problem for Google, with their server farms.

But anyhow, back to the copyright issues. I’m not really sure how that will play out, since it’s not my area. I’m wondering if there’s an argument to be made that the videos are of low quality? Or that it’s the users responsibility to upload original content?

The big worry here is that if the copyrighted content starts going away, is there enough original stuff left to support the YouTube community? I’m betting there is, as some of the stuff that’s the most popular on YouTube is original content. You won’t be able to watch The Wall but you can watch Shoes.

Lastly, I read another blog post (wish I could find the link again; if I do I’ll add it here) that had a pretty interesting breakdown of how the $1.6 billion would be divided among the founders, venture capital, and employees (about 60?). Basically, the two founders would easily clear $100 million each, and every employee would at minimum be an instant millionaire. Pretty sweet deal for about a year’s work at a startup.
