PlayStation 2 Newbie: Jedi Starfighter
So a while back on a whim I picked up a PlayStation 2 and I’ve since realized, I suck at these console games. I often feel like a crotchety old-timer, and play like one too, as my character stumbles on screen and gets blown away because I can’t make heads or tails of the confusing controls. Here are my aging, Gen X thoughts a video game I’ve tried:
Star Wars Starfighter: This game is based on Episode I, which pretty much ensures suckitude. Out of all the Star Wars movies, Episode I: The Phantom Menace had the least amount of cool space battles, and therefore to base a “Starfighter” game on it was a stretch. The banter from other pilots to you is about as close as it gets to the Star Wars feeling. If you want to fly an X-Wing or a Tie Fighter like me, get a different game.
The controls were pretty confusing to me. The most frustrating aspects of it are the unfortunate tendency for your ship to turn upside down and end up in some strange orientation, making me wish for some kind of balancing button. The zoom targeting feature is pretty cool visually, but in the zoom mode things move by much faster that I feel ill. Some of the levels have a linear nature as to what you’re supposed to do (escort a large ship down a river) and at times I found it hard to figure out what my goal was, meaning I wasted some time shooting at the wrong things.
Anyhow, I got about halfway through this game and then got frustrated and haven’t played it since. I’m still psyched to play some other Star Wars games. I hear Lego Star Wars is pretty fun.
I must say though, I do have interest in playing a movie-based video games. While common for modern movies, there’s a long list of older films just begging to be raped and pillaged. How about The Last Starfighter?
