Apple = Cat, PC = Dog

October 4th, 2006

ApplePC lovers and Mac fans are always at odds with each other. Why the endless debate about which is better? I think I’ve finally figured it out. The simple explanation is:

Apple = Cat, PC = Dog.

Mac users are cat lovers and PC users are dog lovers.

The Mac vs. PC debate is rooted in the age-old rivalry between cat fans and dog lovers. I suggest that if polled, most cat lovers would prefer Macs and most dog lovers PCs. I base my assertion that cats are Macs and PCs are dogs on several observations:

1. Artists and women prefer cats, while jocks and men prefer dogs.

It’s a known fact that most sensitive, feeling creative types prefer the artsy, sleek, expertly designed Mac that looks cool and content just sitting still. Meanwhile, the jock in sales goes for a manly beast with a big footprint, reeking of raw, virile number-crunching power.

Manly hunter
Do you think this guy has a Mac at home? No way.

2. Dogs are noisy, while cat-lovers prefer quiet.

Steve Jobs spends countless hours berating his staff into removing fans so Macs run quiet. Mac freaks whine about whiny moos. Imagine what stress a barking dog would induce in these silence-loving neurotics.

PC lovers don’t care about quiet, because a noisy machine hurling wind every time you click “Apply” speaks of raw, virile, bone-crushing power.

3. Cats are low maintenance, while dogs need constant attention.

Macs are inherently low maintenance and don’t require constant attention. They “just work”, while with a PC, you’re in for constant troubleshooting, the equivalent of the daily walk. Deep down, however, I think PC users like this. It gives them something to regularly do and therefore feel important, caring for the needy PC that can’t even figure out how to use a litter box.

A Mac user. You can just tell.

4. Dogs don’t live as long as cats.

The average shelf life of a Mac is several years more than a PC.

5. Cats are anti-social, while dogs are hyper-social.

Things have gotten much better with OS X, but for the longest time, the Mac OS was a world unto itself, with its own special, eccentric programs and file types. It was the Mac way or the highway. Mac users like this isolation, while the PC lovers don’t understand why everyone can’t just work together, speak the same language, and exchange viruses.

6. Dogs love to play games, while cats would rather stare.

Macs have to be provoked into playing games, while PCs are totally set up and designed for virile, rodent-crushing fun. Playing the Quake 4 demo on my MacBook was like throwing a peanut butter filled Kong at my cat and seeing things come to an aching halt.

Cat
Games? Yeah right.

7. Cats like to hide and be secretive while dogs read like an open book.

Steve Jobs has led Apple to success partially through sneaky, feline strategy. Apple scratches up the rumor sites. Apple doesn’t comment on any unannounced products. Apple’s whole OS X on Intel project was kept under wraps for years. Meanwhile, every recent Micrsoft move is a canine-esque attempt to get you to love them. It’s frankly rather embarrassing.

8. The dog is welcome at work, while the cat stays at home.

Most workplaces are still PC only. Bring your PC laptop to work and it will fit right in. The Mac is better off at home, asleep.

9. John Hodgman looks like a virile dog-lover while Justin Long resembles a closet cat-fondler.

Just look at this picture. Who do you think has the arf-meister back at the den? Meanwhile, that dark hoodie is covered with cat hair; you know it.

PC and Mac
Hi. I’m a dog. Hi. I’m a cat.

10. The version code names for OS X were all cats.

Puma, Panther, Jaguar, Tiger, Leopard. What else do I have to say?

Disclaimer: I use a PC at work, but have two Macs at home… and two cats.

Disclosure: I own a tiny amount of Apple stock.

    Hahaha. Clever. :)

But I’ve been a Mac user since I was a very young (LC II with a IIe card!!), as are all of my immediate family members. We’ve also had 4 dogs, including the two we currently have. The picture of the hunter could, for better or worse, be my father, a die-hard Mac user since the days of his first IIe.

Possibly Macs can be be either, as those Mac Pros are”reeking of raw, virile number-crunching power.” And Macs are social ( out of the box, Macs can talk to PCs a heck of a lot better than PCs can talk to Macs).

What?!?! And here I thought I was really a dog guy all these years? Doh! (disclaimer: I’m a mac guy).

Dogs also like to hump our leg, but I’m not really sure where that fits into this analogy.

One more: After Apple, Jef Raskin, the “father of the Macintosh” created a product called the Canon Cat.

PC users didn’t flock to the idea.

Chris: yeah, I’m sure there will be exceptions to this analogy. I’m just kind of poking fun at the whole Mac vs. Pc thing.

Dave: The leg humping… maybe Micrsoft likes to screw people? Who knows.

just everybody I know who uses a mac has a dog…..I wrote this somewhere….much better anology!

being happy with a pc is like being happy with a Ford Taurus….being happy with a mac is like being happy with a Ferrari that never breaks down!

Hmm well maybe I’ll have to rethink the analogy or come up with a different on in the future. Maybe I’ll change it to Mac = Democrat and PC = Republicans…

[...] For the past two weeks, I’ve been posting more regularly in a shameless attempt to drive more traffic to this blog and it’s worked out well. I was admittedly rather annoyed that my Paris Hilton entries were getting so much attention, so I decided to challenge myself and blow them off my logs with Apple = Cat, PC = Dog. Well, it worked, but now I’m wondering if I’ll ever come up with something better. Maybe my best days are behind me… [...]

[...] Technorati ranks this blog as 263,547, far higher than last I checked. According to Alexa, today Webomatica crossed over the 100,000 mark to 74,973. Webomatica.com has never been on the chart before (nothing under 100,000 is charted) so I was surprised to see that. If true, it’s all the fault of Paris Hilton, Apple Computer, and Battlestar Galactica. At least I can add two more semi-respectable topics to that embarassing list… So feeling pretty lucky, I went on over to Pingoat and entered the Webomatica blog URL into the blog worth evaluator. The result: [...]

Funny post. We have a mixed household: I use a PC at work, but have a Mac at home… and two cats. The cats now belong to my husband, too, who has a PC. No dogs.

Heh… I use a PC at work and a Mac at home too, so I’m a “fence-straddler”. However only get the warm cuddly feeling from the Mac. I’ve also been bitten several times, badly, by a PC.

Je suis a major major MAJOR cat lover. I believe myself creative and artistic, too. Completely. Yet…the computer I am typing this on is…A PC?
    What?
I know, I am a contradiction. But I also mention, Macs are sleek and works of art, like cats. Also the noises Macs make (those bubble sounds) are more pleasing to the ear, like meows, than the clonking noises (that loud EHH sound) of a PC, like a dog’s violent bark.
    Yeah, thassit.

Hi Alex, that’s cool - I have gotten a lot of responses saying they don’t really agree with my half baked analogy. Maybe the true question is if Steve Jobs owns a cat or a dog? And what about Bill Gates?

So, according to this article I’m a jock, with a love for loud environments where I can be hyper-social. Yep, you’ve got me (and all my mac-owning/cat owning friends) to a tee.

Wow, this Xmas I was planning on getting an MBP, but its snottiness like this that makes me want to get a Dell instead. Will I, by buying a Mac, make articles that reek of “I know bestest” attitude and general high-nosed arrogance like this one. I mean, yes, I know this was meant to be funny, but generalization after generalization begins to grind on even the most light hearted soul after a while. By the end of it I had been almost completely turned off buying a Mac for good.

I have both a cat and a dog, the cat is more needy, more attention hungry, and sometimes louder. Its also had more health problems (at least so far, touch wood) and has managed to make me very angry on more than one occasion. Would you care to metaphor that into an article?

Oh, and that classic Mac=Democratic, PC =Republican in the comments, thats just plain insulting. How about we get away from the hilarious generalizations made here and dare to presume that people get what they want, and what works for them. I know, wild!

Wow, I really should not have come here…I knew it would just make me angry.

Thanks for visiting Elias C. If you don’t share my sense of humor I guess this blog just isn’t for you.

Consider that one reason why some of us started blogging is reading ridiculous articles online and becoming angry. I’d love it if you were so angered by what you read here, that you decided to start a blog. Then keep at it for about a year and see how you fare under the withering comments from 35 thousand random visitors a month :)

Thanks for visiting and commenting, it keeps me amused.
