YouTube: It’s the Pizza

October 1st, 2006

TechnologyIt’s this week’s thing-to-blog-about: Is YouTube really worth a billion dollars? Mark Cuban says no. Newsweek isn’t sure. Others say focus on the technology.

I’m going to suggest a different angle. I found out YouTube’s offices are located in downtown San Mateo, right over Amici’s Pizzeria. Today, I walked right by there on my way to the library.

So this got me thinking, out of all the pizza joints in San Mateo, why Amici’s and what does this say about YouTube? Why didn’t they set up shop over North Beach Pizza just two blocks east, or Domino’s around the corner? Or Pizza My Heart? Or The Pizza Man?

When I worked at a tech company in Redwood Shores, Amici’s was the place to get pizza if you wanted to pay way too much, because you could. It’s great pizza, but the type of place where feel like you should be eating your slice with a knife and a fork.

Where one one hand Domino’s and Little Ceaser’s are slumming it, Amici’s is on the “dude, it’s just a pizza” end. Needless to say, when the bubble burst I stopped eating at Amici’s.

I would feel more comfortable if YouTube was located over North Beach Pizza (a cozy San Francisco chain) or Pizza My Heart (the Palo Alto college student feeling) but with Amici’s, I’m feeling that - like the pizza - YouTube is overvalued.

(Note: I’m kidding with all of the above. I just get the feeling there are a lot of people speculating wildly with not much to go on… and I’m having pizza for dinner. Don’t ask from where.)
