Star Trek Enhanced

October 1st, 2006

Star TrekLast night I watched one of the first Original Series Star Trek episodes with the “enhanced” treatment: basically CGI effects substituted for the at times cheesy 60s ones.

The episode was Balance of Terror, one of my favorites. Overall, the additions are appropriate and top notch. The Enterprise has a weight to it, and little things like phaser fire and cloaking and uncloaking of the Romulan ship are subtle, but professionally done and effective.

I think the trick is that the effects don’t draw much attention to themselves. They aren’t effects for effects-sake or to show how awesome computer generated images are these days. The point of Star Trek has always been the story and the actors. So it’s nice to see that the effects people realized this and didn’t go overboard.

What’s really cool, however, is the general clean up of the image quality. The whole episode had a depth to it and an contrast that was really impressive. It’s almost like watching a whole new show.
