Digg, Video Podcasts
September 25th, 2006
The New York Times has an article about the Digg folks launching Revision3 as its own company. Makes sense to me. I’ll admit to watching / listening to Diggnation regularly, as well as checking out Control Alt Chicken.
I actually didn’t know about Digg the website until after I was hooked on Diggnation the podcast. So the podcast angle worked out pretty good for Digg in my case, since it’s basically advertising for the site. And conversely, the site generates content for the Diggnation show. Another strength of Diggnation is that it’s pretty much two guys with laptops yapping about tech, filmed on the cheap in an apartment, resulting in something profitable and beneficial to Digg the site without much cost or effort.
However, the podcast / site thing doesn’t seem to be something just anybody could pull off. Kevin Rose and Alex have the benefit of being comfortable in front of the camera, definitely an advantage they have from TechTV experience.
In some way, this may be sweet revenge for anybody who formerly worked in Hollywood or has been spending years trying to break in with little success. I’m sure we’ll see more and more TV hosts, struggling actors, and filmmakers realize they can get a niche audience via the web and have much more of an audience than relying on traditional media channels.
