Podcast = Apple?

September 23rd, 2006

AppleGee, I dunno about this. Supposedly Apple sent a complaint to the site Podcast Ready saying they infringe on Apple’s trademarks and confuse customers.

The word “podcast” has been bandied around so much on blogs and in the general public. In my mind it refers to regularly updated talk radio / news audio files distributed over the internet. The association with the iPod is slightly secondary, since you can listen to podcasts on any computer. If the term were “iPodcast” that would be a definite Apple association.

I’d be all for Leo Laporte’s suggestion to start calling “podcasts” “netcasts”, which could also cover the annoying “video podcast” term. Whatever happened to “webcast?”

Disclosure: I own a tiny amount of Apple stock.
