Seems like the fan firmware update from a while back helped things a bit... it runs a bit cooler. However at times it still definitely gets too hot for comfort on the upper left top and bottom. I'd say from the MBPro side of the fence my main gripes after about 6 months with the machine are: a) The heat b) The whine Pretty much my original gripes. The heat is a big deal though. Every once in a while I'll forget about the heat problem and pick up my Mac after a long session and *ouch*!!! burn my little fingers off :-) One feature I've come to admire though is that magnetic power plug. My Mac has already been saved several times over from me (or one of my coworkers) tripping over my power cable. Cool.
