iPod Games

AppleHere’s a pretty good overview of the new games for the iPod. The games only run on an iPod 5G, not the Nano.

I ponied up for Tetris. The price is $4.99 which feels a bit steep, but I figure I’ll play Tetris a great deal more than watching Pirates of the Caribbean on my iPod. The purchase process is the same as buying music from the iTunes Music Store. The games download into iTunes where they sync up with the iPod.

The Tetris controls are a bit funky but after a bit of monkeying around they make sense. Scrubbing the wheel left or right moves the block left or right, clicking the wheel left rotates the block one way and clicking the wheel right rotates the block the other. To drop the block straight down, you press the click wheel down. Graphics and audio are souped-up and a bit over the top, considering you’re basically moving squares around. Other than that, if you’ve ever played Tetris it’s the same deal.

So it’s pretty cool to be able to play some decent games on the iPod, although they may be a bit family and kid oriented. The only “grown up” game offered seems to be the poker game Texas Hold ‘Em. I wish for some sort of space shooter. Maybe next Steve-note.

Disclosure: I own a tiny amount of Apple stock.
