Apple Updates iPods, Movie Store, Plus iTV

September 12th, 2006

The special event was chock full of iPod related updates; here are my thoughts on them:

The Shuffle got the most dramatic makeover. My first iPod was a Shuffle, and it’s gotten even smaller, plus it has a built-in clip. It seems to be about the size of a post-it note. Another nice touch is the included dock.

The Nanos are metallic and in colors, making them look like a hybrid of the former Nano and the iPod Mini. The metal case will hopefully alleviate complaints of scratching.

The iTunes movie downloads are priced too high for me to want to take part in. My current NetFlix account costs $10 bucks a month and gets me as many movies as I can watch in that time. So one movie download for $9.99? No thanks. I was really hoping Apple would offer cheaper, lower quality movie downloads, at about $3 or $4 but this didn’t happen. I’ll still look forward to downloading Battlestar Galactica episodes however.

I’m psyched about iTV however. It looks like you can use it for any content that will play in iTunes: not just movies downloaded from the iTunes Store. Meaning, hopefully one can rip a DVD, convert into the proper format, and watch on a TV.

So in my opinion, Apple really delivered this event.
