Amazon Unbox Video

September 7th, 2006

TechnologyAmazon is now selling video downloads with a service called “Amazon Unbox” and this might provide some clues as to what Apple is up to with their expected movie download service, due to arrive next week Tuesday.

Some of the offerings are appealing, as in TV episodes for $1.99, similar to what Apple is doing in the iTunes movie store. Of particular note: Classic Star Trek Episodes.

The files are said to be a DVD-quality video and a lower quality version suitable for portable video players. Judging by the file sizes, this seems right on: Office Space the movie is a 1.2 GB download. Yikes. The price: $13.45. Double yikes.

At that price plus the length of time to download such a file, I want a discount, DVD quality or not. Plus, in general the UI of the Amazon store is decent but nowhere near as slick (useable) as the iTunes Music Store. My last gripe is, here I sit on my Mac, and it looks like all the videos are PC only.
I’m confident whatever Apple will be more exciting than this, or at least Steve Jobs’ reality distortion field will make is seem more exciting. Once again, I’m hoping there’s a lower price point for lower quality videos. 3 or 4 bucks is my sweet spot.
