New iMacs
September 6th, 2006
This morning, Apple snuck out an iMac upgrade, with a huge 24 inch version for 2 grand. All the new iMacs have Intel Core Duo processors, and the cheapest, 17 inch model is now $999. At that price point, I feel the absence of an eMac is forgivable, especially when one considers the Mac Mini.
I still have an aging G4 iMac (looks like a lamp) that is feeling a bit long in the tooth, and so at some point in the next year, I’ll probably bite on one of these iMacs. This particular iMac form factor has been around for a while now, has surely gotten most of the bugs worked out, and it’s hard to think of how one could improve on this iteration, save faster chips and incrementally thinner cases. The only bugaboo is if you prefer a separate monitor to this all-in-one solution.
Now that these iMacs are out of the way, it’s almost certain there’s some meat to next week’s Apple special event that deserves our full attention.
