Free WiFi Coming to Silicon Valley

September 6th, 2006

TechnologyLatest news via the NY Times reports that free WiFi will be coming to Silicon Valley, including all towns in San Mateo, Santa Clara, Alameda, and Santa Cruz counties, which is a huge area to cover. There will be tiered services based on speed and price, but the free basic will ba a not shabby 1 MB a second.

This is definitely nothing I’d give up my home broadband connection for, but it will be sweet to pop open the MacBook anywhere outdoors or in the car and be able to check the internet. It makes sense to do this here in Silicon Valley which prides itself on the technology it sells around the world. I also think the prospect of San Francisco getting wirelessly-wired added some urgency to the matter.

Anyhow, combined with the fact CalTrain may also get wireless access, I’ll soon never be able to escape the internet unless I go out of town.
