Apple To Roll-out iTunes Movies And ‘One More Thing’

September 5th, 2006

Apple“A wireless video streaming device, possibly slotting in to the Airport Express lineup is rumoured for launch alongside the iTunes Movie Store following Apple’s realization that people aren’t too interested in watching feature length movies on a tiny screen.”

I’ll just say a few things, which I’ve said before on this blog: a price point of nearly 10 bucks puts this in the realm of movie ownership which I feel is less appealing than movie rentals. Many movies I don’t feel are worth owning and I’m not going to pay 10 bucks for the large majority of films out there, especially when a NetFlix account is cheaper in the long run. So for this service to fly, the films have to be priced appropriately and I think that price point is around 4 or 5 bucks a download. It should be spun as a movie rental service, not a movie ownership service. Second, if this is a device that hooks up to a home theater, it better have surround sound and decent video quality. Optical out would be one way to go.

There are several ways I could see video downloads working well for Apple and the iTunes Music Store, but these two items will be crucial to whether or not I personally sign up for it.
