Music Notes: The Perfect Song

August 30th, 2006

A Perfect SongAfter posting some thoughts on recent albums and realizing how enjoyable ranting about music can be, I’m starting a new series: The Perfect Song. Instead of complaining about music I don’t like, I’ll get to rave about music I love and you’ll also gain some insight into where I’m coming from music-wise. Each post will outline my thoughts a particlar song that gets my 5 star rating in iTunes. So far I’ve identified about 30 which should give me enough material to blog about for quite some time.

I must mention that many, many songs I love but give 4 stars because of one or two odd things that bug me. For example, Squeeze’s Cigarette of a Single Man I really like, except for the awkward piano break. I like Paul McCartney’s This One save for the coda. ABBA’s Take A Chance On Me would have gotten 5 stars if not for the lyrics I can’t stand.

All of the perfect, 5 star songs I’ve collected so far seem to have a perfect combination of musicianship, production, and lyrics that serve the song. They all seem to have strong melodies and strangely, seem to be of a slower tempo. I guess I’m not really into hard driving rock and roll. For whatever reason, each calls up emotions and whenever I hear said tune, the closest thing I can compare it to is a dose of a mellow narcotic, or a bite of a smooth, creamy French chocolate.

Anyhow, I’ll get started on blogging this series after I wrap up some more album reviews.
