If you use Gmail and own a Mac, check out Google Notifer. It’s basically an application that hangs out in your menu bar and periodically checks Gmail to see if you have new mail. This version fades in a window with a text excerpt of any messages when they arrive. If you want to check your mail there are shortcuts via the menu bar icon to go to Gmail in your web browser. This version also includes some connectivity with Google Calendar, which I don’t use.
