WWDC: No Surprises from Apple

August 8th, 2006

AppleMaybe it was the Monday blahs, but nothing insanely great was announced at Apple’s WWDC yesterday. Mac Pros are great machines but totally expected. Also expected were the endless Leopard demos and lots of features that look cool, but if you think about them a bit more, aren’t really going to change my life or improve what I do on a daily basis.

I think the issue, and it’s not a huge failing on Apple’s part by any means, is that I don’t really have a compelling reason to buy the top of the line Macintosh any more. 90% of what I do is web, email, graphic design, all of which can easily be handled by an iMac. It seems the realm of the Mac Pro is suited for people who do video editing or 3D CGI.

Plus the Mac Pro is just so large. There’s something to be said for just getting a laptop and hooking up a monitor for when you’re at your desk. The trend definitely seems to be towards portability or at least a low footprint. At the very least, Apple could have designed a new case for the Mac Pro.

Minor gripes I know, but gripes nonetheless. I really hope there’s a special Mac event in a few weeks that will announce some fun stuff like new iPods.
