Apple WWDC Rumors and Predictions
The first day of Apple’s WWDC is tomorrow, and there will be new product announcements from Apple in the morning. Many rumors are flying about, new iPods, new PowerMacs, and the next operating system Leopard. Some enterprising folks are posting images taken of the Moscone Center from the outside, where a second-floor banner supposedly describes Leopard as “Vista 2.0″. Anyhow, here are my WWDC predictions, for what they’re worth:
1. Preview of Leopard, once section of which will be a comparison with Vista, demonstrating how OSX does it one better. Jobs will likely state clearly that Microsoft has been modeling Vista after the current version of OSX, which will be obsolete when Leopard comes out.
2. New Apple desktops with Intel, mostly likely called the “Mac Pro”. Apple will introduce them by mentioning how Intel has just come out with new chips and price drops, and these chips will be in the Mac desktop line. It will also be announced how with these announcements, the entire Macintosh line will have gone Intel. Expect many long, detailed, and boring demos of the new desktops compared to the old and Dell Windows machines munching on movie posters and such.
3. Sales of MacBooks and MacBook pros will have been much greater than expectations.
4. A refreshed iPod Nano, most likely increased storage and video capability. Same price point.
5. An announcement from Adobe on the ship dates of their products.
6. An update to Airport Express, hopefully including streaming video capabilities.
Anyhow, we’ll see how close I get tomorrow. I have a feeling it will be disappointing to many as usual, because the WWDC is rightly focused on developers and as a result, very OSX software-demo heavy. It’s not the appropriate place to announce consumer hardware products.
Disclosure: I own a tiny amount of Apple stock.
