iChat Mobile?

August 2nd, 2006

AppleiChat Mobile mockup, that frankly on closer inspection looks to be fake. However, I still think the apple iPhone is a great idea and I would probably pony up for one. I already carry an iPod most days and a music carrying phone or an iPod with phone ability has instant appeal.

One obvious hurdle for an iPhone would be the cell phone service provider. It seems Apple would need to partner with a currently existing cell phone company in order to make it happen. In a dream world, Apple could get around this by doing VOIP and using the internet to carry voice data. However, this can’t happen today as there simply aren’t enough WiFi hotspots around to make it practical. So maybe the first iPhone will be a home phone idea, maybe a VOIP phone for the home? The other thought is the iPod itself could have WiFi added, and be VOIP-able. Just adding wireless ability to iPods could open up a new world of music sharing. Imagine being able to listen to the iPod belonging to someone sitting a few yards away from you, wirelessly.

Anyhow, once again, anything Apple has up its sleeve in the weeks to come is sure to be interesting.

Disclosure: I own a tiny amount of Apple stock.
