Moving

July 21st, 2006

WebomaticaMoving is always a chore. Boxes are scattered around, filled with all the stuff deemed non-essential, which is the vast majority of posessions. Called up the electric and phone companies to change the services over, trying to get an overlap of a week since we’ll be shuttling back and forth between the old and new apartments. Electric and gas were no problem, but the phone service, specifically our DSL is unable to do an overlap, meaning it has to be turned off at the old place and then reactivated at the new after several business days. Technophile that I am, the thought of going without broadband for even a few days is scary.

The plan so far is to move all these non-essential boxes first, then the clothes and dishes, and lastly the heavy furniture and electronics. Tanja wants to paint the master bedroom before we move all the crap in, and that will have to happen this weekend. I want to figure out what goes in the second bedroom, most likely the computers, books, my collectible stuff, and Tanja’s art supplies. Tanja wants reign over the kitchen and I guess we’ll share the living room, my primary concern being the surround sound system.

I recall when we moved into our current place and Tanja had a truckload of stuff that barely fit in the apartment, and we worked for several months trying different arrangements of the same furniture to make everything fit. Although we’re moving to a bigger place, I hope we can avoid the expected route of just filling it up with more consumerist garbage. It would be nice to retain a sparse feeling.

There are lots of other tasks to be done, updating addresses everywhere, cleaning up the old apartment, handing over keys, getting keys from the new place, making sure the cats don’t flip out. At least there is a firm deadline of August 1st to get all of this completed.
