Apartment Hunt: Part 4

July 10th, 2006

WebomaticaThis past weekend was busy to say the least. Two apartments we wanted to check out were rented before we got a chance to see them. One was a house in San Bruno, which would have been great commute-wise but sad in terms of neighborhood things-to-do. So we weren’t too disappointed to miss out on that one.

The first place we checked out was a duplex in North Berkeley. Just right, it was pet friendly, fairly large (I’d guess twice the size of our current place), and somewhat near the Gourmet Ghetto, North Berkeley BART, and Shattuck stuff. We’ll find out Wednesday if we get it; keeping our fingers crossed.

The other places were all a wash. #2 was an absolutely huge second floor of a Victorian, two bedrooms with a loft the size of our current apartment, huge kitchen with vaulted ceilings and ornate woodwork around a fireplace. I would guess it was around 3000 square feet, I kid you not, however it was on the border of Oakland and Emeryville. I have certain feelings about gentrification and how it’s kind of sad that people are afraid to live in “that neighborhood” however the prospect of not being able to walk to any neighborhood shops was a definite thumbs down. Not to mention we saw a cop car pull up to the building next door as we were leaving.

#3 was a 2 bedroom near the north end of the Berkeley campus. The fellow showing the apartment had a routine where he gave a little speil about the building and the rules for applicants: fill out a form, give him a $20 application fee, give him $250 deposit, and how it was in a desireable neighborhood close to the Cheesboard Pizza. Truth be told, I think he was slyly building up demand for what turned out to be a 1 bedroom that could conceivably be called a two bedroom if you consider the living room a bedroom. Plus, the kitchen was the size of a closet, and the fellow felt the need to mention that there was a big window sill if you wanted to put a grill on it. Needless to say we didn’t stick around to see who put in their $270. Tanja’s take on it was that we would kill each other within a month in such close quarters.

#4 was in the Sunset district of San Francisco. All I can say is the location would have made our commute much easier, however it had gross carpeting, a strange layout, and the backyard was basically a cement slab with some weeds sticking out of it. It also had a cheesy 70s vibe with big glass mirrors, gold wallpaper, and light bulbs encased in globes… perfect for a casino, not so much a home. For better or worse, we know what Dave’s apartment looks like, and this was definitely nothing remotely comparable at an uncomfortably high price.

So at this point, we’re getting a bit nervous with it being the middle of the month and all, but still hopeful that we’ll find something soon. If we get the first duplex in Berkeley, our hunt will be over. If not, look forward to some further blog posts on this subject.
