Plate Lunch in the Bay Area

July 3rd, 2006

FoodPretty nice article in the Chronicle about plate lunch in the Bay Area. Having grown up in Hawaii, I certainly have a soft spot for the two scoops rice and island meat meal. I’ve always been partial to Grace’s, Zippys, and L&L but I’m open to just about any variation. To me, a good plate lunch has mac salad, two scoops rice, and kim chee. I’d also recommend getting the mini unless you really know you’re hungry.

When I lived in the Mission in San Francisco I ate quite often at a Hawaiian Drive Inn about two blocks from my apartment. I have to admit the mac salad was a bit bland, the curry watery, and the katsu sauce a bit weak, but the basic tastes were there.

We’ve eaten at Hukilau down in San Jose, and I wasn’t as impressed as it was basically plate lunch food except with a waiter, actual plates, and you have to tip. There’s something about plate lunch that means a recyclable container and white paper napkins.

So I have enjoyed the plate lunches at L&L (There’s one in Daly City and another in downtown San Francisco) and J&J’s (guess where they got that name from) in Menlo Park. Gee, I’m getting a craving for chicken katsu curry over chow fun right about now.
