Apartment Hunt Part 2

July 2nd, 2006

WebomaticaNice sunny weekend spent driving around the East Bay looking at neighborhoods and apartments. Looked at two places in Temescal, just on the edge of North Oakland. One was right next to the freeway with a lot of space (2 bedrooms, kitchen, washer and dryer) but looked a bit run down. I think it was a little too removed from the Macarthur BART for our comfort, meaning a few block’s walk along an edgy part of Telegraph.

The second apartment had a nice modern interior but upon another thought, didn’t have a living room. It also was priced a bit high. I get the feeling a lot of people (and smartly so) are buying Oakland properties, renovating, and splitting them into several units so the owner can live in one and rent out the other. I guess that’s one way to manage a 700-800 thousand dollar mortgage.

We also drove through Alameda again, checking out the lower part near the Oakland airport which looked pretty much like Foster City (which we’re not into). The drive today took us through Berkely proper, Elmwood, and Rockridge. All very nice areas. Now that we have a better idea of what we’re in for, hopefully the apartment hunting will go smoothly.
