Digg 3.0

Digg

Digg is probably the only Web 2.0 site I spend much time on. They just released an update with new features and an improved design. I like it. The article links are broken up into categories and there’s a just a better feel for those with accounts. The digg spy and rating options have a nice fade-out effect that adds some extra polish. I’m chomping at the bit to check out the crazy Flash info-graphics that were previewed last week.

I’ve also noticed the ability to rate comments has a self-policing effect. Stupid comments are hidden from view, and in general, the ratings by the other Digg users are generally accurate. I compare the set up to Slashdot and Craigslist and Digg seems to be an improvement so far. I just wish they’d allow replies to replies.

The way I heard of Digg was through their podcast Diggnation which is pretty entertaining. I’d say it was a fairly brilliant move on their part to advertise in this manner to drive traffic to their site, and likely at low cost for the company. How much does it really cost to put two dudes with laptops and a few beers in front of a camera? But that low-tech quality is part of its charm. I don’t get the sense I’m being conned or sold something by Digg. They provide a service that’s fun and I’m hooked for now.
