Bill Gates, Minimum Wage Hike

June 21st, 2006

Just some general observations on current events: Bill Gates recently announced his departure from Microsoft into full-time philanthropy. He plans to give away all of his billions to charity in hopes of solving world problems. It’s a pretty awesome statement by the richest American. He doesn’t intend to leave much to his children. After all, anybody born in America already has a huge leg up over a kid born in Africa, and too much wealth has a good chance of spoiling the next generation rotten. So I’m all for Gates’s plan.

Meanwhile, our nation’s leaders nixed a minimum wage hike, while a week earlier they gave themselves a raise. This pissed off a lot of Dems, and should piss anybody off who is sick of politics as usual and politicians in the pockets of corporate interests. The way it is right now, corporate America pretty much gets anything it wants and even writes the rules, so anything that makes them suffer a little bit and give back to the workers is fine by me. It would do a little bit to ease the disparity between rich and poor and stop all our wage gains being eaten up by inflation.

You should know that America is not the only country dealing with this kind of salary schemes. I am quite familiar with all this. I just want to say that I have great respect for Gates' ideas, he sure is a wise man and I appreciate him for that too. As for wage disparities, they will always exist one way or another.
