Apple Movie Service Rumors
Download movies for $9.99? Sounds good to me. A first run movie ticket costs $9.50 and it’ll soon be over ten bucks. An iTunes download means watching a film at home for two (or more) people - a big savings. Older movies however, aren’t as appealing as with NetFlix I can get my fill of several movies for ten bucks a month. You can forget about $19.99 for a first run, pre-DVD movie however.
The ultimate criteria is what movies are worth owning in what format and for what price. I’m finding most movies are disposable: watch once and you never care to see it again; perfect for downloading. The few films that I really want to own, I’d like in a more solid format, which means DVD.
It seems downloaded movies would fill in a particlar, small niche: one filled by television shows - which usually have so many episodes that owning all the DVDs is cost-prohibitive - or just plain bulky, or timely events such as sports shows. Last are blockbuster films that people want to see impulsively, but in a month the market and urge to see them will have evaporated. Many ultimately money-losing films could get a little more lifetime through immediate downloads close to their premiere date.
Disclosure: I own a tiny amount of Apple stock.
