Apple iPod Factories: Whole Foods

June 16th, 2006

AppleSo Apple has been accused of manufacturing the iPod in near “sweat shop” conditions. Here’s a link to some photos. I must say, the same is probably true for all the electronic gadgets we buy here in America, and it’s pretty sad. However, just because it’s standard practice doesn’t mean nothing should be done. Although I’m as much of an iPod fan as anyone, it definitely has a different aura about it knowing the conditions it was produced under.

I think Apple could take a cue from Whole Foods, who today announced they are halting the sale of live lobsters under the decision that they can’t guarantee they are being treated humanely. Yeah, I know it’s a bit strange to ask your eventual meal to be treated kindly, but this isn’t about the immediate, bottom-line effects. It’s about image. Companies are realizing that customers are interested in how their products are made, and some would use it as a reason for not buying a certain product.

Disclosure: I own a tiny amount of Apple stock.
