Movie Notes: The Machinist
June 14th, 2006

= 3 stars
Starring Christian Bale, Jennifer Jason Leigh
Directed by Brad Anderson
Strange, moody, mesmerizing. I saw horror, thriller, Hitchcock, Memento, and a bit of Raging Bull. Christian Bale lost so much weight for this part that he literally is a walking skeleton. From the first scenes I felt a lot of “huh?” and then depressed (as how interesting could an insomniac, a hooker, and a machine shop be), but the film soon morphs into a wrong man, who’s framing me type thing that is strangely compelling. I’ll admit that I wasn’t completely satisfied by the ending, but as a rental it fits the bill.
