Playstation 2 Newbie

June 9th, 2006

TechnologyAnother toy I got recently was a PlayStation 2 (slim). Anyhow, I haven’t owned a console for years and as such I’m totally inept at games and have no idea what to buy. I did get some recommendations from people and have narrowed it down to a few. I’ll post some more extensive reviews of these games as I work my way through them.

Katamari Damacy for PlayStation 2

Katamari Damacy. This is the first game I bought. You basically roll a ball around and stick crap to it. I have to say, part of the appeal for me is the cleanliness factor. I’m not a total neat-nick, but there’s something subconsciously satisfying about seeing trash on the ground and picking it up. There’s a surreal sense of humor in this world filled with animals, Lego-esque people, and crud floating in the ocean. The background music is also entertaining. There’s a sequel called We Love Katamari that I’m definitely getting.

PS2 Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas - Special Edition

Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas. I decided not to buy this game but it was fun while it lasted. You’re basically a hoodlum running around Los Angeles (and eventually San Francisco and Las Vegas) committing crimes because you can. The violence and swearing was a bit too much for me. I would watch a movie where people shot each other and crime was rewarded, but something about being a thug myself is not terribly appealing. I did however enjoy stealing a car, then a motorbike, dodged a few bullets, and ended up in some hick town with country music on the radio. The sunset lighting effects are also pretty nice.

Final Fantasy X: This game looks awesome. It’s some kind of sci-fi-fantasy role playing adventure with several characters on a quest. I don’t remember a thing about these games except the really archaic ones on my brother’s Nintendo. Back then all the dialogue was printed on screen in blocky letters, and now there’s CG rendered characters with voice dialogue. The art is amazing, the combat system cool, gee, just everything looks like extra effort was put in to make it a game to experience and own. Definitely buying this one.

Final Fantasy X-2: The opening of this game was startling to me and then I felt a bit uncomfortable getting to control three hot young babes fighting evil. I’m going to wait on this one until I finish Final Fantasy X, just so I don’t jump the gun with these characters.
